UVic Men's Hockey

In a Saturday night match up at Kelowna Memorial Arena, the University of Victoria Hockey Club looked to continue its hot start to the 2012 portion of the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League season.

After posting back-to-back victories last weekend and climbing into fourth place, UVic could get to within two points of third place Thompson Rivers University with a win over the 8-2-2 Coyotes. UVic entrusted its goaltending duties to Jason Margolus while Okanagan College gave the reigns to Sunny Gill. Bus legs or not, the first period couldn't have started off worse for the UVic Hockey Club. Just 24 seconds into the game, Okanagan College took the lead on an unassisted goal from Chris Glen. Instead of folding, UVic responded almost immediately. Barely one minute later, defenceman Mark Callaghan buried his fourth goal of the year to level the score. The frantic pace would subside after Callaghan's goal and play would settle in until sophomore Mark Prest notched his second of the year at the 16:40 mark. After the first period of play, UVIC 2 OC 1. UVic would fail to capitalize on numerous power play opportunities in the second period in what was a heated, chippy twenty minutes. Okanagan College would level the score by the 8:43 mark of the second despite UVic's many chances. Shortly before the second intermission, Dustin Taylor would give UVic the lead once again with an even strength effort. After two, UVIC 3 OC 2.The final period of play saw UVic finally capitalize on the undisciplined play of the Coyotes. Brent Sutherland would score a power play goal at 4:26 to give the Club a two goal advantage. Just 31 seconds later, Justin Ferreira capitalized on the sudden shift in momentum and extended the UVic lead. Okanagan College was unable to stay out of the box and Mark Callaghan would bury his second of the game at the 7:44 mark with the man advantage to put the game out of reach. The Coyotes would add a late goal but it was too little, too late. Final score, UVIC 6 OC 3. Matthew Bell, the reigning BCIHL MVP, continued his strong play with two assists. Brent Sutherland and Dustin Taylor each chipped in with a goal and an assist while goaltender Jason Margolus stood tall in the UVic net. The UVic Hockey Club improved to 6-7-2 on the season while Okanagan College dropped to 8-3-2.UVic went 2/10=20.0% on the power play while Okanagan College was 0/4=0.0%. UVic out-shot the Coyotes by a margin of 34-27.
