One night after coming out on the good side of a 12-2 shelling, the TRU WolfPack overcame a tougher challenge from Selkirk College and extended their unbeaten streak to seven with a 6-5 victory at Memorial Arena.
The WolfPack started off strong with the first goal of the game scored by Jassi Sangha, assisted by Curtis Tonello and Duncan Schulz. The time of the goal was 17:42. Selkirk responded with Andrew Green scoring their first goal for Selkirk at 16:51. Green was assisted by Scott Jago.
From there, the TRU WolfPack didn’t let up and at 9:51 Schulz scored on a set-up from Mick Ludvig and Joshua MacDonald. Team captain Andrew Fisher extended the lead with a shorthanded goal assisted by David Gore at 5:34. With just a couple minutes left in the period, Mick Ludvig scored the final goal before intermission on a power play. Ludvig was assisted by Schulz and Lucas Daoust.
But Selkirk came back strong in the second period after Fisher scored his second goal of the evening. Garrett Kucher scored the team’s first goal of the period at 15:13, followed quickly by a power-play marker from Justin Sotkowy. Selkirk continued their scoring streak with Green scoring the final goal of the period and his second goal of the game, leaving the teams tied 5-5 going into the final period.
However, the WolfPack picked up their game in the end, and Joshua MacDonald scored the game winner at 9:40 of the third period to secure two points for TRU. Mick Ludvig and Duncan Shulz picked up assists on the play.
“We jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first half of the game but took our foot of the accelerator for a bit and it was tied 5-5 by the end of the second," WolfPack head coach Don Schulz explained. "But in the third we outshot them 10-4 and had many chances to add to our total while minimizing theirs.”
The WolfPack will now have a well-deserved rest before beginning the second half of their BCIHL schedule on January 20th, 2012 against Okanagan College.
