The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack had a tough start and a tougher finish on Saturday night, but played well enough in the middle to secure a 4-4 tie against the Okanagan College Coyotes at Memorial Arena.
The Coyotes quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Miles Houston and Marc McKenzie, but TRU wasted no time getting back in the game. Lucas Daoust scored to put TRU on the board on an assist from Travis Herlein at 8:38. Andrew Fisher then tied up the game in with assists from Curtis Tonello and Shane Oatway. And before intermission, Duncan Schulz fired TRU to a 3-2 lead.
“We were down two nothing and came back right away," says Daoust, who was named the game's first star. “We played well and didn’t quit in the first period.”
Travis Herlein scored in the second period to give the WolfPack a two-goal advantage, with Lucas Daoust and Dylan Becker picking up assists. Unfortunately, TRU faded in the third period with Okanagan College’s Brendan Urban and Chris Glen scoring two goals to tie up the game.
“We had some breakdowns in the defensive zone in the third period and those are things that you have to learn to persevere the lead," says TRU head coach Don Schulz.
Both Daoust and Schulz said the team needs to work on playing consistently for 60 minutes and learn to not crack under pressure in the third period.
“We played really well for about 56 out of 60 minutes and you know we let it slip away for those 3 or 4 minutes,” Schulz explained.
With another tie under their belt, TRU will get a chance to have a bit of a rest. According to Schulz, “the team will have a couple weeks of solid preparation" before playing the University of Victoria in a pair of games at Memorial on Friday, November 18th and Saturday, November 19th.
