Thompson Rivers University will face off against Okanagan College this weekend with the WolfPack having a chance to pick up points against one their top rivals.
Currently, TRU and Okanagan College are tied for third in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League standings with five points each, though the Coyotes have played one fewer game.
WolfPack captain Andrew Fisher doesn’t expect Saturday's game to be an easy win. A preseason matchup between the teams ended in a 2-2 tie.
“Usually with Okanagan College it’s a pretty close game,” says Fisher, who insists that TRU is stronger than their early results have indicated. “Where we are in the standings isn’t indicative of the team we are.”
Head coach Don Schulz echoes Fisher's expectation of a tight contest.
"We’ve only played Okanagan once so far this year and it was a hard fought game. We hope to have a solid week of preparation and hope to give them a real good test on Saturday night."
A victory over the Coyotes would produce bring the 'Pack back to .500 after opening the season with a trio of road losses at Eastern Washington (twice) and Simon Fraser University.
“We can do better,” says assistant captain Cody Lockwood, noting that the squad has looked better since the two-game set at Eastern Washington.
The WolfPack currently boast three of the league's top 10 scorers in Jassi Sangha (T-2nd, 11 points), Fisher (T-5, 9 points) and David Gore (T-5, 9 points).
Saturday's game is set for an 8:00 pm faceoff.
NOTES: Coming out to the game isn’t the only way fans can help support the team this month. The WolfPack have banded together to raise money for prostate cancer research by participating in Movember, which will see each team member grow a moustache.
“I hate mustaches personally, but it’s a sacrifice,” says Lockwood. “We decided as a team we were going to do it.”
