The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack had a tough weekend against the Eastern Washington University Eagles to open their B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season over the weekend.
The 'Pack dropped both ends of a two-game set in Cheney, WA to an Eagles team making their BCIHL regular season debut, picking up a 6-2 defeat on Friday and a 4-3 loss a night later.
In the weekend opener Jassi Sangha and Andrew Fisher struck in the first for the 'Pack while former BCHLer Ryan Pajimola replied for the Eagles. But the home team surged to a lead in the middle frame on markers from Jake Flynn, Bret Kellogg and Elliott Martin, and found insurance markers in the third from Flynn and Josh Jesberger.
In Game Two it would be the Eagles who struck first as AJ Saunders managed to get the puck past 'Pack goalie Riley Wall to give the hosts a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. The second period would see a trio of goals. The first came off the stick of Shane Oatway, who had a virtually wide open net and cashed in after a deflection off an EWU defender. Less than five minutes later David Gore would give the WolfPack their first lead of the night as he put it past Cash Ulrich, but late in the period Eagles forward Brandon Butler would even up the game.
The third period opened up with a bang as Taylor McClay would make it 3-2 Eagles less than 30 seconds into the frame. Just over halfway through the final period the WolfPack penalty kill would get a goal as Curtis Tonello roofed the puck past the Eagles goalie. The game would stay tied until, with just 3 minutes left in the game, AJ Saunders squeezed the puck past Wall.
The TRU WolfPack are back in action on Friday when they host the Trinity Western Spartans in their home opener
