WolfPack win one, lose one at SAIT Eye Opener tourney in Calgary

TRU Men's Hockey

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack got their first taste of Alberta Collegiate hockey competition on the weekend, winning one and losing another at the 2011 Eye Opener tournament hosted by the SAIT Trojans in Calgary this weekend.

The 'Pack opened the event with a 6-5 victory over the Grant MacEwan Griffins on Friday in a game highlighted by a pair of goals from rookie forward Duncan Shulz. Leading by one in the third, TRU managed to kill a five-minute penalty to blueliner Dylan Becker while also seeing a Griffins goal disallowed after it was ruled that netminder Shane Mainprize was pushed into the net.

David Gore, Andrew Fisher, Mick Ludvig and Curtis Tonello rounded out the scoring for the WolfPack, while Sean Poitras netted a pair and Chris Boyle, Matthew Peddie and Mike Ivey potted singles for MacEwan.

On Saturday, Thompson Rivers fell to the ACAC powerhouse SAIT Trojans by a 6-1 score.

The first period proved a tight battle as both teams had their chances, though SAIT ultimately went ahead on a goal from former Prince George Cougars forward Corey Tyrell.

The Trojans extended their lead in the second period on a pair of goals from Garrett Watson before WolfPack captain Andrew Fisher put his team on the board late in the frame.

SAIT took over the game in the third, however, as goals from former BCHL scoring champ Clinton Pettapiece, Tyrell and Matt Stefanishion capped the scoring. The Trojans with a 2-0 record were named tournament champions for a 3rd straight year.

"It was an excellent weekend for us and a great opportunity for our program," says TRU head coach Don Schulz. "We got to showcase against the ACAC, one of the best leagues in Canada."

"It wasn't the final score we'd hoped for, but our guys really asserted themselves and to finish second in the tournament in our first year is saying something."

The 'Pack now have six days off before opening up the regular season on the road against the Eastern Washington University Eagles next Friday, October 7th. Faceoff is set for 7:30 PM.
