The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack are willing to go the extra mile --literally -- to make a positive statement against some new competition this weekend.
Once they've completed the long road trip to Calgary, the 'Pack will get their first taste of Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference competition when they take on the Grant MacEwan Griffins on Friday and the host SAIT Trojans a night later at the school's annual Eye Opener Tournament.
The WolfPack are coming of a solid weekend that saw TRU drop a tight 6-5 decision on Friday night at Memorial Arena before returning the favour at Bill Copeland the following evening by a 5-2 margin.
WolfPack captain Andrew Fisher played a key role in both games chipping in with two goals on Saturday to lead his team to victory.
Coach Don Schulz thinks his team will fair just fine with the long bus ride: “Lots of our guys have played Junior A and Junior B before so their used to this kind of thing. We know these teams will be good, high-end teams so we certainly want to be competitive. It would be nice to come out with a pair of wins, obviously."
"We certainly want our guys to perform well and carry on from our last weekend at SFU, certainly the second game the guys really answered the bell, and I am hopeful that we can embark on a new plateau, and the guys are really starting to buy into the system I'm trying teach them and its starting to come together."
The team's leaders have really been showing they're deserving of their roles, as all four captains have chipped in on the score sheet in one of the last three games.
Coach Schulz also added in regards to line matchups: “It's looking really good, because of injuries and guys with class we have had to juggle lines a little bit, certainly different from what we've been using in practice. They've responded real well, it's a very resilient group, very dedicated to what they're doing and I'm hopeful based on what I saw playing against SFU this weekend that we will give these ACAC teams some good competition.”
Gametimes for this weekend are Friday at 4:00 PM vs. Grant MacEwan and 6:00 PM on Saturday against SAIT. Both games will be played at SAIT Campus Centre Arena.
