SFU adds size, skill up front in two-time KIJHL All-Star Bevin Ollek

SFU Men's Hockey

The Simon Fraser University’s Men’s Ice Hockey program is pleased to announce a commitment from forward Bevin Ollek (Kamloops, B.C.) to attend SFU and join the team for the 2011/12 British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League season.

Ollek is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound power forward who joins SFU following a pair of seasons in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, both with his hometown Kamloops Storm. Ollek joined the Storm in the fall of 2009, scoring 30 goals and totalling 51 points as a KIJHL rookie.

He then netted 16 goals and 37 points during the 2010/11 season while being named a league all-star for the second consecutive year. His career totals include 46 goals, 42 assists and 454 penalty minutes in 98 games played.

“Bevin brings a big, physical presence on the wing, plus he’s proven that he has the ability to contribute offensively,” says SFU general manager Jeff Dubois. “He’s also shown that he has a tendency to take his game to a higher level in the postseason, which is a key for us. With the right attitude and effort, Bevin will have the opportunity to step in and contribute regularly as a first-year player.”

Ollek was an assistant captain in his final season with the Storm, and he captained the B.C. Major Midget League’s Thompson Blazers during the 2007/08 campaign.

“SFU is a great school academically and the hockey program has won back-to-back championships, so it was an easy choice for me,” he says. “I’m a strong, smart player and I like to use my size to my advantage, hitting and getting to the net. I’m going to bring a solid work ethic every night and do everything I can to help make it a three-peat.”

The addition of Ollek brings SFU’s commitment total for the 2011/12 season to 14. He joins a group that includes:
  • Graeme Gordon, G, Vernon Vipers/BCHL
  • Tyler Mah, D, Flin Flon/SJHL
  • Derek Henderson, D, Grand Prairie/AJHL
  • Kenton Valliant, D, Portage/MJHL
  • Todd Fletcher, D, Burnaby/BCHL
  • David Dotan, D, Spruce Grove/AJHL
  • Taylor Swaffield, D, Trail/BCHL
  • Mike Krgovich, F,  Coquitlam/BCHL

  • Trent Murdoch, F,  Prince George/BCHL
  • Tony Oak, F,  Battlefords/SJHL
