SFU clinches spot in 2011 BCIHL Championship Final with late raly over UVic

For the Simon Fraser University Clan, Sunday's BCIHL Championship Final has two-for-one deal written all over it. Not only will SFU have a second crack at rivals Thompson Rivers University after a Friday night loss, they'll also have the opportunity to clinch a second consecutive Provincial title.

SFU advanced to Sunday's final following a come-from-behind 5-1 victory over the University of Victoria on Saturday night at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.

Mark Callaghan opened the scoring for the Vikes midway through the first with a wrist shot from the point that eluded a screened Justin Mulholland. And Victoria did an excellent job keeping the SFU offence in check through the first and second periods until Ben Van Lare took a pass from Colby Kulhanek on a three-on-one and scored through the five-hole of UVic netminder Tim Manuel.

The defending BCIHL champs took control of the game early in the third period, as team captain Paul Moscone finished a nice rush with a goal just under the crossbar of Manuel. Less than a minute later, Bill Smith tipped a Kyle Boyko point shot to give the hosts a two-goal lead. Jaime Laprise, on a penalty shot, and Manny Haider, into an empty net, rounded out the scoring.
