The Simon University Clan got most of what they came for during a two-game weekend set in Victoria. Unfortunately for the defending BCIHL champs, the trip may be remembered more for what was left behind.
Just 33 seconds away from securing a weekend sweep, the University of Victoria netted a tying marker when Matt Bell deflected a point shot from Matthew Oliphant. That goal represented a dramatic ending to a game that saw the Vikes take a 2-0 lead only to find themselves down 3-2 when the third period began.
UVic eliminated that deficit at the midway point of the period, but fell behind again with 3:27 remaining when Jaime Laprise scored off a goalmouth scramble.
The game was marred by penalties, as the team's combined for 18 man-advantage opportunities. SFU made good on two of eight chances, both resulting in Ben Van Lare goals in the second period, while the Vikes finished the game 0-for-10.
One night earlier, SFU grabbed a 4-2 win at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre on the strength of a three-goal second period. Van Lare, Colby Kulhanek and Kyle Leung did the damage for SFU after Brett Campbell and Paul Moscone had traded goals in the first period.
