On a milestone night at Bill Copeland Sports Centre, the Simon Fraser University Men's Hockey team were forced to come from behind to pull out a 3-1 victory over Trinity Western University and improve their 2010/11 BCIHL record to 4-3.
Captain Paul Moscone became the first-ever Clan player to reach the 100-point plateau, assisting on Jaime Laprise's game-winner four minutes into the third period.
"It means a lot," said Moscone following the game. "I've had some great teammates over the last couple years. I've been with Laprise for all four years and he's helped me out. It was good to feed him for the 100th."
SFU head coach Mark Coletta, who's been behind the bench for three of Moscone's four seasons, couldn't have been happier to see his captain hit such a monumental achievement.
"As the league's gotten better, Paul's stayed consistent and played the same game. Giving him that game puck in the locker room was an honour for me and just having a kid like that around is awesome," he says.
The record goal came just 1:17 after Bryan Brunton scored his first in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League. The fourth-year defenceman, who transferred to SFU in the offseason from NCAA Div. III St. Michael's College, blasted a slap shot past Spartans' netminder John-Paul Chapman to tie the game.
After a scoreless opening period, Nathan Wiebe broke the ice for Trinity Western, snapping a shot past Evan Kurylo five minutes into the second to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Spartans held the lead into the final frame and looked intent on handing SFU its second home loss in three outings at Bill Copeland.
But two quick strikes salvaged a victory for the Clan a night following their 7-2 defeat on the road in Kamloops.
"As a coach, you lay down a challenge to the boys and say 'listen, we're down 1-0 and on the verge of going 3-4 on the season.' You challenge them to go out and have a better period and they certainly responded," says Coletta.
Kurylo earned his second victory of the season, making 40 saves and keeping his team in the game through the first 40 minutes.
SFU will jump on the bus again next weekend for back-to-back meetings against Selkirk College in Castlegar. The Clan beat the Saints 7-1 in Burnaby last weekend, but the team is 1-2 away from home this season.
