For the first time in its history, the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League saw two players tie for its top award. University of the Fraser Valley forward Rob Vos and Simon Fraser University counterpart Paul Moscone finished in a tie for the BCIHL's Most Valuable Player honours for the 2009/10 season.
Vos is now a two-time winner of the award, after picking up the first ever MVP nod at the conclusion of the 2007/08 campaign. Vos is the BCIHL's all-time leading scorer with 56 goals and 134 points in 51 games, and finished atop the league's scoring charts for the 2009/10 season with 23 goals and 52 points.
The MVP nod was a first for Moscone, who finished seventh in league scoring with 36 points while leading SFU to its second consecutive BCIHL regular season title. The 23-year old is second only to Vos on the league's all-time scoring list with 95 points in 54 career games.
The BCIHL also announced the recipients of four other league awards, which were all captured by Simon Fraser University players.
SFU captain Andrew Graham picked up the Top Defenceman Award after setting a BCIHL record with 33 points from the blueline. Graham, who scored eight times while adding 25 helpers, also anchored a defence core that allowed a league-low 68 goals over 24 games.
Justin Mulholland was named the BCIHL's Top Goaltender in his first season in the league following a transfer from Dalhousie University. The 22-year old led the league with 15 wins while suffering just four losses in the SFU net. His 2.85 goals-against average and .908 save perecentage were both amongst the BCIHL's best.
Moscone was also a recipient of the league's Most Sportsmanlike Player Award, which he received for the second consecutive season. In addition to scoring well over a point a game over the course of the season, Moscone was assessed just six penalty minutes.
Finally, Simon Fraser University head coach Mark Coletta became a back-to-back winner of the league's Coach of the Year Award. Coletta has led SFU to consecutive first place finishes and a 32-6-2 record in two seasons behind the bench. He has also overseen a league record 20-game home winning streak, which will carry over into the 2010/11 campaign.
The BCIHL Awards were determined by a vote of coaches from the league's seven member teams. The recipients will be honoured at the league's 2010 Awards Banquet on Friday, March 19th at the Langley Events Centre.
