The five-team field for the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League Championships could well come into focus this weekend, as a pair of crucial two-game series could clinch postseason berths for Thompson Rivers, the University of the Fraser Valley and the University of Victoria.
The Okanagan College Crusaders have the most to lose this weekend, as anything less than a split of their two-game home set with the TRU WolfPack would likely put an end to their championship aspirations. Thompson Rivers, meanwhile, can clinch a tournament berth with a single point.
The Crusaders will also be looking for some help on Vancouver Island, as Fraser Valley travels to face UVic on Friday and Saturday. Trailing both teams by two points but giving up three games in hand to UFV, Okanagan's best bet at moving up the standings would appear to be at the expense of the Vikes. A pair of OC victories this weekend and a Fraser Valley sweep on the road would put the BCIHL newcomers in control of their postseason fate with two games remaining.
SFU, who has already clinched a tournament spot, could wrap up first place in the regular season standings with a win and two TRU losses this weekend.
