Cascades off to quick start in 2010 following trio of wins over Selkirk

The UFV Hockey club is off to a perfect 3-0 start in the New Year with a new head coach and has jumped from fifth place into a tie for second in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League standings.

Jarrett Craig has taken over the rains as the club’s head coach alongside Kyle Krunick. Craig has helped coach the Junior B Abbotsford Pilots and the Fraser Valley West Bruins of the B.C. Major Midget League. The team has also picked up two new goaltenders, Rhys Chesney and Adam Postmus, and forward Landry Dorsett.

On January 10th UFV welcomed Selkirk for their first meeting of the season. New addition Landry Dorsett tallied twice, Matt Ehrenriech had two goals and two assists and Simon Brouwer pitched in with a goal and three assists for the Cascades. Without the strong performance of Selkirk keeper, Cody Deadmarsh, the score could have been higher than the 6-0 margin of victory. Chesney turned aside all 28 shots faced to record a shutout in his first BCIHL game.

This past weekend UFV travelled to Castlegar to finish a home and home against the Saints. The first game saw stellar performances from the goaltenders, Rhys Chesney and Cody Deadmarsh. The only goal of the game was in the first when Michael Rudnisky stole the puck away from a Selkirk defender and passed it to David Scherer to go 2-0 with the pass going to Riley Cullen. Chesney recorded his second shutout in a row and has yet to allow a goal in the BCIHL.

The Sunday morning game saw the same solid performance from the goaltenders, Adam Postmus and Cody Deadmarsh. But in the third period UFV broke through with a five goal third period to win 6-0. Matt Ehrenreich finished the game with two goals and two assists and Robert Vos pitched in two goals and an assist. Adam Postmus recorded a shutout against his old team with a 50-save effort.
