If anything was learned this weekend by the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, it was how much of a gap there is between themselves and the defending champions of the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League.
Meeting up with title holders on Vancouver Island this weekend, the WolfPack came out on the short end of both games. After dropping an 11-3 decision on Friday, the TRU came up short again Saturday in an 8-2 loss.
“These were two unacceptable efforts by the team,” said TRU head coach Chris Hans “We didn’t compete hard enough and were easily distracted from our game plans resulting in selfish, half hearted efforts.”
In Saturday’s game, UVic led 2-1 after the first period.
“I thought we were fortunate to be down only by a goal,” Hans explained.
Brock Fraser (1st year, Kamloops, BC) was pulled after allowing two goals on the first seven shots he faced. Jassi Sangha (1st year, Kamloops, BC) scored for TRU: his second goal in as many games.
UVic added three goals in the second period including one short handed. Dyne Parker (1st year, forward, Fruitvale, BC) scoring for the WolfPack. The third period was more of the same as UVic capitalized three times, two with the man advantage. The home team outshot TRU 29-25.
UVic moved to 6-6-3 and a solid third place in the BCIHL. The two losses drop the ‘Pack to 8-6 and second spot. UVic does have two games in hand on TRU.
“We need to get back to doing those things that brought success like composure, hard work and discipline.” Hans explains. “ Fortunately, we have two weeks of practice to get back on track.”
The WolfPack return to play in the BCIHL on January 23rd and 24th at Memorial Arena when they face this same University of Victoria team.
