SFU tops defending champs Victoria in season opener

Simon Fraser University opened their 2009/10 campaign Friday night with a convincing 9-1 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes at the Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby.

The offensively-deep Clan scored early and often, taking full advantage of three early power play opportunities in the first, including a five-on-three, to take a 3-1 lead after the opening period. Sergei Dobrianski and Jaime Laprise had SFU ahead by a pair just 3:35 inot the game before Paul Moscone and Victoria's Dave Blake traded markers to close out the period.

SFU then sealed the two points in the second , exploding for another five goals to increase the margin to 8-1 while chasing Vikes' starting goaltender Federico Angel from the crease. Laprise, Angelo Scigliano, Mat Tzetzos and David Kim -- with a pair of goals less than eight minutes apart -- account for SFU's offence in the middle frame. 

John Bokla, who had a goal and an assist in the win, tallied the lone third period marker to put an exclamation mark on a 9-1 victory for the Clan, who desperately want to rebound this season after being upset by the Vikes in last year’s BCIHL Championship Final.

David Kim was the Clan’s leading scoring on the night with two goals and one assist, while eight other SFU players had multi-point games.

SFU’s next matchup will come against Castlegar’s Selkirk College on Saturday, October 3rd at the Burnaby Winter Club with the faceoff set for 6 p.m.
