Simon Fraser University’s Men’s Ice Hockey program is pleased to announce commitments from a trio of British Columbia Hockey League grads who will be joining SFU for the 2009/10 BCIHL season.
Forward Patrik Martin recently concluded his third season with the Trail Smoke Eaters, scoring five times and adding 10 assists in 59 games. Over a 130-game career with the Smoke Eaters, Martin totalled 11 goals and 17 assists. The Rossland, B.C. native also collected 184 penalty minutes during his time in the BCHL.
"We’re very excited to have Patrik on board for the coming season," says SFU head coach Mark Coletta. "He’s a hard-working, physical player who will stand up for his teammates and go to the tough areas. We’ll look to him to be a leader and set a good example on and off the ice."
Forward John Bokla recently concluded his junior hockey career with the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Drumheller Dragons, scoring nine goals and 21 points in 25 games following a trade across the Rockies from the Burnaby Express. Previously, the White Rock native played three seasons in the BCHL with the Merritt Centennials, Surrey Eagles and Burnaby, totalling 22 goals and 58 points in 103 games.
"We’re very pleased to have Jon as a part of our group and we expect him to be a key player for us in the seasons to come," says SFU head coach Mark Coletta. "He’s a big, strong guy with a lot of skill and he sees the ice well. "
Goaltender Justin Mulholland is transferring to Simon Fraser following a season spent at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he played for the Tigers in the Atlantic conference of Canadian Interuniversity Sport. His stops in junior hockey included stints with the Western Hockey League’s Lethbridge Hurricanes, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s OCN Blizzard and the British Columbia Hockey League’s Surrey Eagles.
During the 2007/08 season with the Eagles, Mulholland posted a 12-5 record in 19 games with a 3.23 goals-against average and .904 save-percentage.
"Justin is a talented goaltender with a quality track record in junior and university hockey," says Jeff Dubois, the team’s General Manager. "With our three netminders from last season all having graduated, he has an excellent opportunity to step up and fill a very important role on our team."
Martin, Bokla and Mulholland join an impressive incoming class of Junior B graduates, including 2009 PIJHL scoring champ Bill Smith and two-time All-Star defenceman Adam Chapman from the Grandview Steelers, defenceman Kyle Boyko from the Abbotsford Pilots, and wingers Mat Tzetzos from the North Delta Devils and Sam Kobe from the VIJHL's Oceanside Generals.
