The British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League has expanded by two teams after membership applications from Okanagan College and Thompson Rivers University were approved at the league's Annual General Meeting in Castlegar this weekend.
The BCIHL's two newest squads will join the Selkirk College, Simon Fraser University, Trintity Western University, the University of the Fraser Valley and the University of Victoria for the 2009/10 season.
"On behalf of the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League and its member teams, I'm very pleased to welcome Okanagan College and Thompson Rivers University into the fold for the 2009/10 season," says league chairman Kim Verigin. "Both teams brought forth very impressive applications and our league looks forward to establishing a strong presence in a pair of Okanagan markets."
Expansion highlighted a weekend meeting that also saw the strengthening of the league's player eligibility guidelines and the re-election of Verigin, who is Selkirk College's athletics director, as league chairman. Other topics of discussion at the event included scheduling, awards and marketing, all of which will carry over into summer work for league representatives.
