SFU, UVic to meet for BCIHL Championship on Sunday

Simon Fraser and the University of Victoria are set to meet for the 2009 BC Intercollegiate Hockey League Championship on Sunday.

SFU assured their spot in the final with a 5-4 overtime win over the University of the Fraser Valley on Saturday morning and later picked up their third tournament win in as many games with a 5-3 triumph over Victoria.

The Vikes, meanwhile, wrapped up their spot in the final with a 7-2 victory over Trinity Western University on Saturday afternoon. Victoria had previously defeated the University of the Fraser Valley in an overtime thriller on Friday.

Fraser Valley wrapped a hard-luck two days with a 7-4 win over TWU to close out the tournament. The Cascades played well enough to win against both SFU and UVic but found themselves on the receiving end of overtime losses, dooming them to a third place finish after back-to-back trips to the Championship Game in 2007 and 2008.

In a Championship Game preview, SFU edged by Victoria on Saturday evening after third period goals by Jaime Laprise and Craig Munro broke a 3-3 deadlock after two periods. While both squads were already assured places in Sunday's game heading into the contest, the win clinched first in the round-robin and home team status a day later.
