But the game was almost over before the puck dropped, with SFU taking a commanding 5-0 lead after 12 minutes and holding on for a 6-3 decision.
Paul Moscone led the way offensively for Simon Fraser with a first period hat trick. He scored again short-handed in the second period to record his first four goal game since joining the team from the PIJHL's Grandview Steelers at the beginning of the 2007/08 season.
Garrett Lee recorded his league-leading 10th win, allowing just a single goal in two periods of play. Lee gave way to Cailen Marshall for the third period.
Blair Driedger continued his strong play of late, scoring the other two goals of the game for SFU while linemate Jason Pagliaro contributed a pair of assists.
Brad Lindsey, Mitch Bartley and Nathan Sagert replied for Fraser Valley, who enjoyed strong netminding from back-up Cody Olinek after he relieved starter Josh Pastoor after the fourth SFU goal.
Simon Fraser returns to Abbotsford in two weeks time to begin defence of their BCIHL Championship from a year ago. As the top seeded team, they'll enjoy home-ice advantage through the round-robin portion of the event.
