Selkirk College may have scored first, but it was Simon Fraser University that got the last laugh during a two-game series in Castlegar this weekend.
On Saturday, Selkirk's Nick Maloff got his team off to a hot start, converting a pass from teammate Leighton Allsop to give the home side a 1-0 lead. But it was all SFU from that point forward. Blueliner Iain Stewart tied the game minutes later and assistant captain John Bressette scored back-to-back goals to put his team ahead for good.
Stewart and forward Jackson Friesen each ended the night with three points while a foursome of other SFU players enjoyed two-point outings. Netminder Garrett Lee picked up his seventh consecutive win in net for Simon Fraser, turning aside 28 shots.
SFU got off to a quick start on Sunday morning in the back end of the doubleheader, with Friesen and Criag Munro potting goals in the opening two minutes.
Winger Jaime Laprise enjoyed a career-day for Simon Fraser, scoring three times and adding four assists. Eric Koch picked up the win for SFU with 21 saves while Mitch Frank scored his first league goal on a late power-play.
Selkirk College and SFU will face off again next weekend when they meet at Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby as the second stop on Selkirk's three-game road trip. Gametime on Saturday, January 24th is 8:15 PM.
