The University-College of the Fraser Valley and Simon Fraser University will meet in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League's championship game Sunday after a stunning turn of events that left the University of Victoria on the outside looking in.
Victoria appeared to have all but clinched a spot in the final after a 5-1 victory over UCFV Saturday morning and needed only to beat, tie, or lose by three goals or less to SFU in the evening bracket of games to advance. But after carrying a 3-2 lead past the midway point of the second period against Simon Fraser, the Vikes conceded six unaswered goals and crashed out with an 8-3 loss.
Even with UCFV's morning loss to Victoria, the Cascades punched their ticket to Sunday's final with a 10-2 win over Trinity Western in their final round-robin game. UCFV, SFU and Victoria all finished with matching 2-1 records, but Fraser Valley and Simon Fraser advanced because they had the best two goal differentials amongst the group.
UCFV and SFU will now face off at 1:00 pm Sunday for the 2008 BC Intercollegiate Hockey League Championship. Catch all the action in person at Langley Twin Rinks or via the BCIHL's live internet broadcast, which can be accessed through the league's website.
