University-College of the Fraser Valley forward Robert Vos has been voted the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League's Most Valuable Player for the 2007/08 regular season. Vos, who finished the season with a double-digit lead in points, beat out Selkirk College defenceman Mike Boisvert for the honour.
"Rob was absolutely phenomenal for us all season," UCFV head coach Randy Zinn said. "He can score and he can set things up - he was our leading scorer and most valuable player by far."
Vos was the only player in the BCIHL to eclipse the 20-goal and 40-point plateaus during the league's 16-game regular season, and was the top forward named on every All-Star ballot submitted by coaches from opposing teams.
"I think he just watches guys like Ovechkin make moves on TV and then he goes out and practices and practices them until he can pull them off in a game," Zinn said of Vos's talents with the puck.
Selkirk College defenceman Mike Boisvert finished second in MVP balloting, a testament to his talent given that he played on a team who finished with a 1-15 record. Boisvert led the Saints attack with nine goals and 16 assists, good for fifth in league scoring. He was also Selkirk's top defenceman on their own side of centre, often playing 40 minutes a game.
"Rob and Mike were clearly the cream of the crop in our league this season," Simon Fraser University assistant coach Jeff Dubois said. "Vos was the guy our whole team would key on, but he'd still find a way to score. Boisvert was a very solid presence for Selkirk - exactly what they needed on a first-year team - and he was their rop offensive threat as well."
The B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season wraps this weekend with the league's Championship Tournament, being held at Langley Twin Rinks from Friday, March 14th to Sunday, March 16th. Visit the BCIHL website - www.bcihl.ca - for the full tournament schedule, scores and statistics.
