The University of Victoria Vikings stand on the verge of clinching their second consecutive BC Intercollegiate Hockey League title after sweeping their final Lower Mainland road swing of the season with victories over the University-College of the Fraser Valley and Trinity Western University.
Friday's win over the UCFV Cascades was a huge step for the Vikes, as a loss to their closest competitor would have throw the door open for a fight to the finish. Victoria centre Nathan Murray scored a power-play goal with three minutes remaining in the third period to break a 2-2 deadlock and hand the Cascades their first home loss of the season.
The Vikings earned two points despite the absence of a number of top players from their squad, including forwards Kit Matkaluk, Brett Campbell and Justin Cormier and defenceman Etienne du Toit.
Victoria now stands to put the finishing touches on the league's top regular season record with home wins over Selkirk College next weekend. The Vikes defeated Selkirk 11-4 and 6-2 in Castlegar earlier this month.
