Matt Martin hasn't been known as a high-volume goal scorer early in his BCIHL career, but that seems to change when the Selkirk College forward travels south to Eastern Washington University's Cheney campus.
The 22-year old scored a pair of goals in the first period on Saturday night, bringing his total at the EWU Recreation Complex to four in less than 40 minutes of action over the past two weekends. Martin had also scored back-to-back markers in the third period of the Saints' win a week earlier.
Martin's tallies, as well as singles from Jamie Vlanich and Ryan Edwards, led Selkirk to a 4-3 win over an Eagles squad that couldn't find an equalizing goal despite 18 shots on goal in the third period.
Paxton Bell, Trevor Zakrajsek and Brett Mathews replied for EWU.
Brett Huber made 40 saves to record the win on a night when his team was outshot by a 43-20 margin. Tyler O'Donnell allowed three goals on eights shots to take the loss before being relieved by Austin Brihn in the second period.
With the win, Selkirk solidifies their spot atop the BCIHL standings with a 8-2-0-0 record and 16 points, good for a 6-point lead on second place TWU and SFU. The Eagles, meanwhile, are now mired in a 6-game losing streak and sit in last place with a 2-8-0-0 record.
