EWU's Walker named Player of the Week after hat trick in win over Selkirk

Eastern Washington University forward Beau Walker has been named the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week ending January 18th.

Walker came up big for the Eagles on Friday night when he scored three goals and chipped in an assist in a 5-2 home ice victory over Selkirk College.

The rookie standout opened the scoring midway through the first period, but saved most of the dramatics for the final frame. Leading 2-1 heading into the third, Walker sprung linemate Brett Mathews for a breakaway goal before extending the EWU lead to three less than two minutes later with a goal from the slot.

The 22-year old capped the scoring and completed his hat trick with an empty net goal with 2:50 remaining in regulation.

The win was a crucial one for Eastern, who pulled to within six points of Selkirk and SFU for the league's final playoff berth. The Eagles are well within shouting distance of the Saints given the teams are set to meet five more times before the end of the regular season.

Walker, who has been an explosive addition for the Eagles' offence this season, now sits atop the league scoring leaders with 30 points in 15 games. 

Runners up for this week's award include Trinity Western University forward PJ Buys, Eastern Washington University forward Alec Burks and Selkirk College forward Darnell Dyck.
