Simon Fraser University is pleased to announce a commitment from former Coquitlam Express forward Ty Westgard for the 2019/20 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
Westgard, who grew up in White Rock, split five seasons of junior hockey between the Surrey Eagles (BCHL), Victoria Royals (WHL), Portland Winterhawks (WHL) and Coquitlam Express (BCHL).
The playmaking forward totalled 177 points (48 goals, 129 assists) in 176 BCHL games, as well as four points in 28 WHL games. During his 2015/16 season, after a successful start with Surrey, Westgard would make the jump to the WHL and join the Victoria Royals for 21 games including 7 playoff games. Westgard was ranked 176th by NHL Central Scouting ahead of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
The 6-foot, mobile forward finished his 2017/18 season second in BCHL assists with 55 and third in points with 70 back with Surrey. His strong season would land him a nod for the BCHL Second All-Star team.
Westgard started the 2018/19 season as the Eagles' captain but was dealt days before the CJHL trade deadline to the Coquitlam Express to finish his junior career with one last playoff push.
Following commitments from Matt Krawiec and PJHL champion Jake Keremidschieff, SFU continues to re-tool with experience and leadership heading into the 2019/20 BCIHL season.
Additional commitments are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
