Dallas Calvin made his return to West Kootenays a memorable one, scoring the game winner on Sunday evening to lift Vancouver Island University to a 3-1 win over Selkirk College in Nelson.
The Mariners had dropped Saturday's weekend opener and fell behind early in the rematch when Andrew Thompson put the Saints ahead on a power play less than four minutes into regulation.
But Kobe Oishi scored his third of the season to tie the game early in the second, and Calvin put VIU ahead off a Gage Colpron feed five minutes into the third. Gavin Rauser scored into an empty net with 41 seconds remaining to spoil any hopes of a Selkirk comeback.
The Saints outshot VIU by a 30-24 margin on the night with Matt Huber turning aside 29 shots in the win. Tallon Kramer made 22 saves and was tagged with the loss.
With the win, the Mariners improved their record to 7-5-0-1 and pull back within four points of first place Trinity Western. Selkirk closes out the fall semester with a 5-4-0-3 record, good for third spot.
Both teams are now off for an extended Christmas break before the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League schedule resumes in January. The Saints will open 2019 with a road trip to the Lower Mainland to face TWU and SFU, while VIU will play a home-and-home series with the University of Victoria.
