Brandon Sookro's power-play goal with 2:33 remaining in regulation completed a Selkirk College comeback as the Saints picked up a 3-2 victory over the University of Victoria at the Ian Stewart Complex.
Selkirk had gone ahead early on a Brayden McCartney goal but Brett Lervold struck back with a pair for UVic, scoring unassisted at the 11:33 mark of the period before being set up by Jack Palmer and Liam Shaw four minutes later.
The teams battled through a scoreless second period and the Vikes held the lead into the third until BCIHL scoring leader Dallas Calvin tied things up with 9:13 left in the period. Victoria defenceman Henry Hart was assessed a 5-minute major with less than four minutes on the clock, setting the stage for Sookro's winner.
Calvin finished with a two-point night after having a hand in both of Selkirk's third period goals and moved 11 points up on his closest competition atop the BCIHL scoring charts.
Brett Huber had a tidy night in net for the Saints, turning aside 22 shots in the win. Michael Fredrick took the loss for the Vikes but was busy in a 42-save performance.
With the victory, Selkirk now holds a five-point lead over Trinity Western for top spot in the BCIHL standings. The Saints continue their island road swing on Saturday afternoon in Nanaimo against Vancouver Island University. Face off is set for 4:30 PM and the game will be broadcast on Hockey TV.
