Cox's hat trick helps Simon Fraser split weekend series at Selkirk College

Cox's hat trick helps Simon Fraser split weekend series at Selkirk College

BCIHL Media

Simon Fraser University avoided dropping a third straight game to Selkirk College on Saturday night when their offensive exploded for a half-dizen goals in a 6-4 win over the Saints at the Castlegar Recreation Complex.

The Clan wasted little time finding the back of the net less than 24 hours after being stimied by Tallon Kramer's 43-save effort, as Eric Callegari opened the scoring just 3:34 into regulation. Takato Cox extended the lead to two minutes later, netting his first of three goals on the night.

Six goals were scored during a wild second period, starting with Dylan Heppler's 11th of the season to draw the Saints within one. Garrett Hilton scored to draw the game level at the 11:36 mark, but Matthieu Jallabert and Cox briefly restored SFU's two-goal lead.

Kadrian Klimchuk picked up a pair of primary assists on goals by Blake Sidoni and Jaiden LaPorte in the final minutes of the second period to tie the game 4-4, but Jallabert struck for his second goal of the period with just six seconds remaining.

Cox scored into an empty net in the final minute of the third period to salt away the win for the visiting Clan.

Kramer faced 52 shots in the loss for Selkirk, while Andrew Henderson made 29 saves in the win.

SFU's win keeps them well-positioned to earn a home playoff series, as they sit four points up on Vancouver Island University. The Mariners do hold two games in hand, however, and the teams do face off in the final game of the BCIHL season on March 7th in Nanaimo.
