The University of Victoria made sure that their first game of 2020 against their rivals from Vancouver Island University was a memorable one, scoring eight consecutive goals en route to an 8-2 victory in Nanaimo.
Blake Holowaty opened the scoring for the Vikes less than five minutes into the first period and Carter Huber doubled the lead before the midway point of the frame. Sawyer Hunt and Keegan Durrance added singles in the second to put Victoria up by four heading into the third, and that's when the floodgates opened.
Staratton Pickett scored with 15:05 remaining in regulation and Durrance netted his second of the game with 13:13 on the clock. Otis Goldman then struck for a pair in the span of 43 seconds, giving the Vikes a total of four goals in less than seven minutes of clock time.
Gage Colpron and Gavin Rauser scored late to get the Mariners on the board.
As lopsided as the game was on the scoreboard, it was just as one-sided on the shot clock but in the other direction. VIU pelted Victoria starter Daniel Paul with 53 shots in the game and outshot their visitors by a 53-24 margin. Matt Huber got the start in goal for the Mariners and was repleaced by Jeremy Balyk after allowing five goals.
With the win, the Vikes sit just two points back of Selkirk College for fourth place in the BCIHL standings and the league's fourth and final playoff spot. VIU is two points back of SFU for second.
