Derek McPhail netted a hat trick in just his third B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League game as Selkirk College cruised to a 7-0 home ice victory over Eastern Washington on Saturday night in Castlegar.
The first-year forward opened the scoring late in the first period and put the Saints ahead by two on a second period man-advantage. The hosts capitalized twice more in the middle frame, as Dallas Calvin and Tyler Hartman scored just 15 seconds apart.
Derek Georgopolous and Dane Feeney netted power-play tallies in the third period before McPhail capped the scoring with his hat trick goal with 3:05 remaining in regulation.
Calvin also counted a three-point night for Selkirk, while Hartman and Parker Sharp contributed two points each.
Brett Huber picked up the first shutout of the young BCIHL season with a 14-save effort. Tanner Loucks was much busier in the Eagles' net, turning aside 29 shots in the loss.
The teams will wrap their weekend home-and-home series when they meet again on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM in Cheney.
