Selkirk rallies from slow start to pick up win over SFU in home opener

BCIHL Media

It's often said that it takes a full 60 minutes of hockey to earn a win, but Selkirk College proved that 40 can do the trick after bouncing back from an early three-goal deficit to earn a 6-3 win over SFU in their home opener on Friday in Castlegar.

The Clan jumped out to an early lead when Daniell Lange scored the first goal of the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season just over a minute following puck drop.

SFU continued to carry the play throughout a 15-shot first period and was rewarded late when Mathew Berry-Lamontagna and Eric Callegari scored a pair of goals in the span of 27 seconds to put the Saints on the ropes at intermission.

But it was all-Selkirk, all-the-time from the opening face-off of the second period, as Derek McPhail scored his first BCIHL goal early in the frame to kickstart a four-goal period for the Saints. Seth Schmidt brought the hosts within one midway through the frame before McPhail and Parker Sharp each scored late in the period.

Gordon Campbell posted an insurance marker seven minutes into the third period and the Saints successfully killed off three penalties in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Dallas Calvin capped the scoring with 41 seconds remaining.

Brett Huber turned aside 29 shots in picking up the win while 2017 BCIHL MVP Lynden Stanwood allowed six goals for the first time since October 2015 in the loss.

But the star of the night was Calvin, who scored once, added three assists and was named the game's first star in his first appearance since sustaining a season-ending injury last November.

The Clan now travel south to Cheney to wrap their season opening road trip with a visit to Eastern Washington on Saturday.
