Fontaine named Playoff MVP, headlines group of five Spartans' All-Stars

For the second consecutive season, Trinity Western University forward Jarrett Fontaine has been named the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League's Playoff MVP following a championship win for the Spartans.

Fontaine scored the signature goal of this year's postseason, netting the Game 1 winner in TWU's league finals series against Vancouver Island University with just seven seconds left to break a 2-2 tie. The Spartans would romp to a 9-1 victory in Game 2 to secure the sweep.

Fontaine added three assists in the series-clinching win over the Mariners and finished the playoff with five points.

The 2019 BCIHL Playoff All-Star team was also announced Tuesday, with Fontaine joining teammates Evan Last, Jacob Mills, Kaleb Denham and Lucas Mills on the squad. VIU forward Dylan McCann was the lone non-TWU representative on the team.

Last led all postseason scorers with six points while McCann was instrumental in VIU advancing to the finals, scoring twice in his team's Game 1 win in their opening round series against Selkirk College. Jacob Mills picked up five points to lead all BCIHL defencemen in playoff scoring and Denham contributed four assists while guiding a Spartans' D-core that conceded just eight goals in four games.

Lucas Mills finished the playoffs with four wins, a 2.00 goals-against average and .914 save-percentage. He led BCIHL goaltenders in all three categories, and stopped 39 of 42 shots in the BCIHL Finals.
