Selkirk College play-by-play voice Rob Squires has been selected as the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League's Broadcaster of the Year for the 2018/19 season, the league announced Friday.
Squires was selected based on his excellent game-calling abilities as well as his positive impact on the overall quality of the Saints' live broadcasts on Hockey TV.
"Rob is very dedicated and committed to putting on a good show and he spends countless hours preparing," says Selkirk College Athletics Director Kim Verigin. "He keeps track of what's happening around the league and studies each opponent at length. We get great comments from all of our fans, parents and relatives who tune in every game."
Squires is no stranger to the BCIHL or the Selkirk College hockey program, and his contributions have gone beyond his broadcasting responsibilities.
"Rob has contributed a ridiculous amount of hours to the Saints over the years. He was our Game Operations Coordinator for several years and after a short time away he took on the role of Play by Play announcer. He has watched the league evolve and has taken extreme interest in bringing our broadcast standards above and beyond average quality, which in turns helps increase people's view of the league and it's professionalism."
Squires will be behind the mic this weekend when Selkirk hosts Vancouver Island University in the first round of the BCIHL Playoffs.
The BCIHL Broadcaster of the Year award has been introduced to honour excellence by those who broadcast BCIHL hockey as part of the league's webcasting service via Hockey TV. All BCIHL regular season and playoff games have been broadcast since the beginning of the 2013/14 season.
Squires is the second person to be named BCIHL Broadcaster of the Year after former TWU play-by-play voice Marcus Fitzgerald received the award in 2018.
