After capping his university hockey career with the biggest goal of his life and his first B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League championship, University of Victoria forward Shawn Mueller added to his list of accomplishments by being named the BCIHL's 2017 Playoff MVP.
Mueller scored the Vikes' championship-winning goal with seven seconds remaining in regulation of a deciding Game 3 on Monday night at the Langley Events Centre. He also assisted on UVic's first goal of the game, as well as a last-minute tying marker in Game 2 that rescued his team from the brink of elimination and forced overtime.
The 24-year old finished second amongst all BCIHL playoff scorers with five goals and eight points in five games. He was also instrumental in the Vikes' first round sweep of first-place Simon Fraser University, as he scored twice in each game while adding an assist to close out the series with five points.
The 2017 BCIHL Playoff All-Star team was also announced Thursday, with Mueller joining Victoria teammates Patrick Holland and Noah Henry on the squad along with Trinity Western forward Evan Last, defenceman Stefan Gonzales and goaltender Silas Matthys.
Holland set a BCIHL postseason record by recording 11 points during UVic's run to a record fifth league championship. The former Montreal Canadiens forward accounted for seven points in a first round series win over SFU and picked up points on all three Vikes goals in their 3-2 championship-clinching win on Monday.
Forwards: Patrick Holland (University of Victoria), Evan Last (Trinity Western University) and Shawn Mueller (University of Victoria).
Defencemen: Stefan Gonzales (Trinity Western University) and Noah Henry (University of Victoria).
Goaltender: Silas Matthys (Trinity Western University).
