The University of Victoria travelled 10 long hours on Friday, arriving in Cheney, WA for the first of back-to-back tilts against the Eastern Washington University. And the Vikes successfully shed their bus legs in time to win a hard fought battle against the Eagles bya score of 4-2.
The Vikes started strong and built a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes thanks to effective special teams play. Luciano Somerville opened the scoring for the Vikes on the power play in the first period, followed by a Shawn Mueller short-handed tally and a Carsen Willans power-play marker in the second.
EWU got on the board in the first minute of the third period thanks to a Paxton Bell goal, but Wolfgang Schoenefuhs restored UVic's three goal lead midway through the period.
Scott Legault had a dazzling performance between the pipes, stopping 60 of the 62 shots he faced. Meanwhile, Austin Brihn made 39 saves for the Eagles and took the loss.
The Vikes and Eagles will wrap their weekend series on Saturday, with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 PM at the EWU Recreation Complex.
