The British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League has unveiled its award winners for the month of January.
Player of the Month - Shawn Mueller, University of Victoria
Mueller led a Vikes squad that picked up three big home wins during the month of January, defeating TWU twice to open 2016 before topping SFU to close out the month. He contributed nine points in those wins, including a one-goal, three-assist effort in a big 6-4 victory over the Clan. Overall, the 23-year old picked up five goals and 12 points in seven January games, including goals in 5 of 7 contests.
Defenceman of the Month - Tanner Hawes, Eastern Washington University
Hawes broke out in a big way offensively to begin 2016. After picking up just three points in 10 games to begin the season, the third-year blueliner hit the scoreboard in all seven January contests. He totalled two goals and nine assists, highlighted by three multi-point games against league leaders SFU. His 11 points during the month eclipsed his season totals from his first two BCIHL campaigns.
Goaltender of the Month - James Prigione, Selkirk College
Prigione enjoyed another rock solid month in goal for the three-time defending BCIHL champs as they battled for first place positioning. He picked up wins over the Spartans, Eagles and Vikes while posting a 2.47 GAA and .907 SV%, both of which were BCIHL-bests for the month. His top performance came against TWU at the BCIHL Showcase when he turned aside all but one of 25 shots in a 2-1 win.
Rookie of the Month - Robson Cramer, Simon Fraser University
Cramer kicked off the new year in style, scoring his first BCIHL goal and being named first star in SFU's first game of 2016 -- a 4-3 win at EWU where they overcame a three-goal deficit. From there, he established himself as a consistent offensive threat from the blueline, picking up seven points in six January games. He now sits tops in BCIHL rookie scoring by defencemen (and 4th overall) with 15 points.
