Trinity Western set for playoff rematch vs. SFU in home opener

TWU Men's Hockey

Trinity Western University will drop the puck on its home schedule this weekend as the Spartans will host Simon Fraser at the Langley Events Centre Saturday at 7:00 PM.

The Spartans are coming off a weekend split with Selkirk on the road, which saw TWU lose 6-3 in Friday’s season-opener, before bouncing back to earn a 5-3 win on Saturday.

BCIHL Standings: 1st (tied)
Last game: Selkirk (5-3 W)
BCIHL Streak: 1 win
BCIHL Form: L-W

SPARTANS NOTES
• Last year, the Spartans turned Langley a fortress of victory. The team posted an 11-1 record on home ice during the 2014-15 regular season, while outscoring the opposition 55-29. Those numbers include a run over their last seven home games, in which TWU only allowed 12 goals.
• The Spartans scored the first two goals in both games against Selkirk. In the win, TWU went on to build a 3-0 lead before earning a 5-3 win. In the loss, the Spartan saw Selkirk rally with four straight goals before pulling away for the win.
• With a hat-trick in Saturday’s win, the Spartans PJ Buys already has four goals on the season and is off to a flying start. Last year, it took Buys eight games to get to the four-goal mark before he eventually collected 14 on the season.
• The Spartans were 3-0 last year in the regular season against SFU on home ice. The last time the Clan beat TWU in Langley in the regular season was Jan. 31, 2014.

CLAN NOTES
• This Saturday’s game marks the season-opener for SFU, as the Clan was the odd team out on the league’s opening weekend.
• Last weekend, SFU went on the road for a pair of games against NCAA Div. I opponents, losing 9-1 against the reigning national champion Providence Friars and then falling 10-2 against the Northeastern Huskies.
• Despite finishing fourth in the regular season last year, the Clan upset the Spartans in the opening round of the playoffs, earning a two-game sweep to advance to the BCIHL championship series.
• While SFU’s leading scorer from last year, Nick Sandor, is no longer with the team, familiar faces like Jono Ceci (12-10-22 last year) and Adam Callegari (4-15-19) are back to help lead the squad offensively.
