Selkirk College busted out of a three-game losing streak at a crucial time and picked up their first road victory of the 2014/15 season in the process, topping Eastern Washington University by an 8-2 score in Cheney, WA on Friday night.
The Saints' power-play, which was busy and effective throughout the game, staked the visitors to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on goals from Ryan Procychyn and Ryan Edwards.
Edwards, a key offseason signing from Beaver Valley of the KIJHL, hit the scoreboard twice more in the second period while also picking up an assist on a man-advantage marker by Selkirk blueliner Danny Vlanich.
The Eagles' Chase Wharton replied on a power-play midway through the second and edged to within three with a shorthanded tally off the stick of Brett Matthews, but the Saints put the game out of reach with three unanswered goals in the third period.
Darnell Dyck scored to restore Selkirk's four-goal advantage before Arie Postmus -- with his first BCIHL goal in his 29th game -- and Edwards, with his fourth goal and fifth point of the night, rounded out the scoring.
Saints netminder James Prigione collected his first win in four January starts, turning aside 24 of 26 shots on goal.
Tyler O'Donnell allowed seven goals in the loss before being relieved by John Kiepe midway through the third period. Kiepe made one stop on two shots.
The win gives Selkirk College sole possession of third place in the BCIHL standings, two points ahead of SFU, while Eastern remains six points adrift of the Clan for the BCIHL's fourth and final postseason berth.
The teams will play the back end of a home-and-home weekend series in Castlegar tonight at 7:00 PM. The game will be broadcast on FAST Hockey.
