The University of Victoria had an exciting weekend. On Friday night they played against Simon Fraser University and came away with a huge 8-3 victory. On Saturday the Vikes travelled to Langley to play against the Trinity Western Spartans but fell just short of a win by a score of 6-5.
Friday night’s game opened with a bang as Adam Klein opened the scoring for the Vikes. It didn’t stop there though, as UVic’s Evan Warner notched a pair of goals just 2:43 seconds apart. By the end of the first period UVic had a 3-1 lead and were outshooting SFU 16-6.
The second period was again almost completely controlled by the Vikes. Adam Klein scored again, this time shorthanded. Goals from UVic’s Rowat, Loudon and Webb followed soon after and by the end of the second period the Vikes were leading by a 7-1 score.
SFU made things interesting in the third period,, scoring two goals in 37 seconds, but they were shut down soon afterwards when Dylan Hykawy scored UVic’s 8th goal of the night. This put a cap on a commanding performance where UVic continued to outshoot SFU through the second and third periods for a total of 40-27.
On Saturday, UVic took on Trinity Western University hoping for another win but came up empty handed. UVic was off to a strong start with two goals in 13 seconds from Klein and Warner, but the Spartans responded back with three goals to end the period.
Early in the second period Luciano Somerville netted a goal for UVic to tie the game. The Spartans scored two more but the Vikes answered that with a pair of their own from Hykawy and Mueller. The game was tied and shots were 31-35 for the Vikes going into the third.
With just over six minutes to go in regulation, Cody Fidgett scored the game-winning goal for Trinity Western in what was an exciting and evenly matched game.
The Vikes get a well-deserved rest this week until Friday, October 31st they travel back to Langley for another game against the Spartans at 7:00 PM.
The next home game for the Vikes is Friday, November 7th when Eastern Washington University comes to town.
