The University of Victoria travelled down to Cheney, WA on Friday, October 10th to play Eastern Washington University in the opener of a two-game weekend series against the Eagles.
The Eagles scored twice in the first period taking a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission. The Vikes battled hard in the second period and the puck started to bounce their way. Adam Klein scored the first goal for the Vikes at 11:14 on the power play to bring the Vikes within one.
The Vikes controlled the play for the majority of the second period, but were unable to tie the game leaving them down by one goal going into the second intermission.
In the third period, the Vikes continued to work hard towards a comeback. Vikes captain, Evan Warner, scored the tying goal on the power play from Cameron Rowat and Chris Manhas. The Eagle’s leading scorer, Beau Walker, scored his second goal of the game on a breakaway at 8:55 of the third period giving the Eagle’s a 3-2 lead.
The Vikes were rewarded with their hard work when Dylan Hykawy tied the game at 3 a piece at 4:34 of the third period.
Both teams traded excellent late scoring chances, but the Vikes prevailed. Vikes veteran center, Luciano Somerville, won a neutral zone faceoff late in the period to Adam Klein who then made a nifty pass to Shawn Mueller just inside the blue line. Mueller beat the Eagle’s goaltender right under the glove, which ended up being the game-winning goal.
Vikes coach Steve Foster was very satisfied with the work ethic of the players especially after the long bus ride. The Vikes will need to play disciplined and continue to work hard if they want to be successful in Game 2 of the weekend series.
