Eastern Washington University is pleased to announce the addition of forward Brett Mathews (Bonner, MT) on a transfer from NCAA Division III Northland College.
The 5-foot-11 170 pound Mathews joins EWU after one year at Northland. Previously, he spent three seasons with the Missoula Maulers of the America West Hockey League. Mathews will see some familiar faces when he arrives in Cheney with former Maulers Paxton Bell and Al Maul already in the fold.
Mathews was a proven point producer at the junior hockey level, playing at over a point per game clip over 126 games. He captained the Maulers as a 19-year old while scoring 19 goals and totalling 54 points in just 37 games.
The addition of Mathews will help the spread the scoring load out for EWU. The past two years have seen the Eagles lack depth in that area and Mathews' addition is expected to help.
"Aside from being a proven point producer. Brett has also been a leader and worn the 'C' before and that was also important to us," says Eagles GM Bill Shaw. "With the large roster turnover we will have we need to make sure that the players coming in fit both on and off the ice at EWU."
Mathews is the 12th commitment for the Eagles this year. The roster is rounding out, but the team expects to announce one or two more additions over the next month.
