Selkirk College picked up their first win of the calendar year and snapped an eight-game losing streak that stretched back to October 12th, topping Vancouver Island University by a 4-2 score on home ice Friday night.
Edward Lindsey and Tayden Woods scored for the Saints in the first period, sandwiching a power-play tally from current VIU and former Selkirk blueliner Garrett Murray.
Woods added his second of the game with the man-advantage early in the second period to give the Saints a two-goal cushion after 40 minutes. That insurance marker would prove to be crucial, as Seth Schmidt -- another former Saint -- set up Garrett Dunlop to put the Mariners within one midway through the third.
VIU put 13 shots on goal in the frame, but Jaiden LaPorte iced the victory for the hosts when he hit the empty net with 26 second remaining in regulation.
Both teams struck twice on the power-play, splitting a combined 11 special teams opportunities. Tallon Kramer picked up the win in goal for the Saints after turning side 31 shots, while Matt Huber made 30 saves in the loss.
The win puts Selkirk five points back of VIU for second in the BCIHL standings, and three points back of SFU for third. More importantly, it increases the gap over the University of Victoria to four points for the league's fourth and final playoff spot.
The teams will wrap their two-game weekend series in Castlegar on Saturday. Faceoff is set for 7:00 PM.
