Vikes score in last minute to force OT, top Selkirk College in shootout

University of Victoria defenceman Tyler Severson completed a dramatic Vikes comeback on Friday night, scoring the shootout winner on home ice to lead his team past Selkirk College by a 4-3 score.

The back-and-forth game had a couple of late twists, as the Saints looked to have struck for a late winner when Tayden Woods scored on a power-playu with 1:33 remaining in regulation. But with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Matthew Hermary drew the Vikes even and sent to game to overtime.

Selkirk outshot the Vikes by a 7-2 margin in the extra frame but couldn't beat Tyler Rennie, who also stopped Blake Sidoni, Parker Wakaruk and Tristen Cross in the shootout.

The Vikes never trailed prior to Woods' late marker, as Otis Goldman opened the scoring midway through the second period. Cross replied for the Saints later in the frame on the man-advantage, and came from a goal down once again in the third when LaPorte tied the game just a minute after Hermary scored his first of the night.

Victoria badly outshot their visitors by a 14-5 margin in the first period, but the shots finished at an even 35-35 for the game. Rennie stopped 32 shots in picking up the win while Tallon Kramer made 32 saves and allowed four goals on six attempts in the shooutout.

The win gives Victoria a boost to end of their 2019 schedule, as they draw to within a point of Selkirk and SFU for third place in the BCIHL standings and a playoff berth.

The Saints fall to 4-4-0-2 on the season and will visit Vancouver Island University to complete their two-game weekend road swing on Saturday night in Nanaimo. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:15 PM and the game will be broadcast live on Hockey TV.
