The BC Intercollgiate Hockey League announced today that Vancouver Island University goaltender Jeremy Balyk is the ANYTHING BRANDED BCIHL Player of the Week for the period ending November 24, 2019.
Balyk went 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against-average and a .963 save percentage as the Mariners swept a two-game road trip in Burnaby against Simon Fraser University.
The Edmonton product kicked out 42 shots, including 17 in the first period, on Friday as VIU doubled SFU 4-2. Balyk’s efforts earned him second star honours in the game.
A day later, the 25-year-old was even better, stopping all but one of Simon Fraser’s 36 shots in a 2-1 victory for the Mariners. He was named first star and earned his third straight win.
The Briercrest College transfer now leads all BCIHL goaltenders in wins this season with six and is third in goals-against average at 3.03. His .915 save percentage is good for fourth overall.
Balyk has been a workhorse for VIU this season, appearing in ten of the Mariners dozen games.
Honourable mentions for this week's BCIHL Player of the Week include Vancouver Island University forwards Alex Hanson (0-3-3) and Brett Witala (2-0-2), Simon Fraser University forwards Eric Callegari (1-1-2) and Ty Westgard (0-2-2).
