Much like the home renovation shows that overhaul a property in 48 hours or less, the 2019/20 edition of the Simon Fraser University Clan has undergone lots of change in a short period of time.
On the heels of a fourth place regular season finish and first round playoff exit at the hands of their Lower Mainland rivals from Trinity Western, SFU pursued an aggressive summer recruitment campaign that has seen no less than 16 new players enter the fold.
The Clan hope that a star-studded group of first-year players can gel quickly with a handful of core veterans and deliver the Burnaby-based school their first BCIHL title since 2011.
KEY RETURNERS
SFU has lost their most valuable player (as well as the BCIHL's 2018/19 MVP) in blueliner Mathew Berry-Lamontagna, as well as three of their top five scoring forwards in Mitch Newsome, Graham Smerek and Brendan Lamont.
But a number of productive rookies are back for a second season in red and white, including Cole Plotnikoff, Mac Colasimone, Eric Callegari, Mitch Ledyard and Nick Holowko. Those five forwards combined to net 83 points last season, and all finished in the Top 30 in league scoring.
Arjan Cheema and Arjun Badh also return as sophomores on a rebuilt Clan blueline that lost veterans Austin Adam and Darnel St. Pierre in addition to Berry-Lamonatgna, and the Clan will look forward to a full season from five-year Junior A vet Dominic Masellis.
Michael Lenko is back for a second season between the pipes after a hot and cold rookie campaign where he carried the bulk of the load.
NEW TO THE TEAM
Where to start? SFU has added a total of nine forwards, five defencemen and two goaltenders since April, but perhaps none carries the same resume as former BCHL star Ty Westgard.
The 21-year old spent time in the WHL with Victoria and Portland, but is best known for netting 104 points in 82 games with the Surrey Eagles over the past two seasons. His 70 points during the 2017/18 season was good for second in league scoring.
Trevor Ayre is another BCHL commit and joins the Clan coming off backto-back 23+ goal seasons, while Daniel Rubin and Justin Lee put up 66 and 58 points respectively in the PJHL as 20-year olds. Christian Bosa and Jacob Lacasse each bring Junior A experience, Bosa from Nipawin in the SJHL and Lacasse from the MJHL's Winkler Flyers.
On the back-end, the Clan have added a trio of CJHL defenders in Jordan Dawson (Nanaimo, BCHL), Adamu Tanaka (Calgary, AJHL) and Colten Gerlib (Nipawin, SJHL). They've also tapped into their pipeline with the Richmond Sockeyes to add Matt Brown and Jake Keremidscieff.
In goal, there's bound to be a heated competition as SJHL veteran Andrew Henderson joins Selkirk College transfer Patrick Zubick to battle Lenko for minutes. Zubick won a total of 15 games for the Saints the past two years while posting a .910 save-percentage.
GETTING STARTED
SFU is getting a late start on the regular season after spending the first weekend of October taking on a pair of NCAA D1 opponents in Holy Cross (9-0 L) and Sacred heart (6-1 L). They will open their schedule with a pair of games at home to Vancouver Island University on back-to-back Fridays before hosting UVic on Saturday, October 19th.
