Simon Fraser wins fourth straight, sweeps weekend series with Mariners

Vancouver Island University came into this weekend's two-series at Simon Fraser University boasting the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League's hottest offence. Six period later, the Clan have taken over that title, along with four points collected from a series sweep over the Mariners.

One night after scoring eight times, the SFU attack was on target again in a 6-3 victory. The Clan built a four-goal lead through 40 minutes on Saturday and held off a late VIU comeback attempt to secure the win.

Cole Plotnikoff opened the scoring for the hosts with 2:40 remaining in the first period and Nick Holowko doubled the lead early in the middle frame. Jaret Babych then put the game out of reach, scoring a pair of goals just 2:30 apart before the end of the period.

The Mariners got on the board early in the third courtesy a Garrett Dunlop shorthanded tally, but the Clan struck 27 seconds later on the same power-play opportunity and Jordan Fun made it 6-1 minutes later. Late goals from Brett Witala and Alex Milligan brought VIU back within three but the game ended a 6-3 final.

Babych was joined by Mac Colasimone, Brendan Lamont, Austin Adam, Eric Callegari and Holowko as six Clan skaters had two points on the night. Witala scored once and added a pair of assists in the loss for VIU.

Michael Lenko picked up his second win in as many nights between the pipes for the Clan, turning aside 24 shots. Brett Clark was beaten six times on 33 attempts for the Mariners.

Both teams return to action next weekend, as the Clan will visit Trinity Western University for a showdown between Lower Mainland rivals, while VIU will host the University of Victoria on Saturday.
