Trinity Western University fifth year forward Florian Niedermaier scored a power play goal with 3:51 remaining to give the Spartans a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the Vancouver Island Mariners on Saturday evening at the Langley Events Centre.
The win completes the two-game sweep of the Mariners and puts TWU at 2-0 in BCIHL league play.
The high scoring affair had VIU taking full advantage of TWU misplays in the first two periods as the Mariners led 2-1 after the first period and 5-3 after 40 minutes.
The final period saw a different, grittier, Spartans team take to the ice. TWU, who had gone 0-11 on the power play Friday evening, took full advantage of their odd man chances and scored three power-play goals in the final 14 minutes of the game to earn the win.
“You talk and talk about what it takes, so it was fun to see the guys realize what it takes to win, once they did the energy was different," says TWU head coach Barret Kropf. "The wins are bonuses when you can learn lessons like we did tonight. So I’m pretty happy with the weekend.”
The Spartans got on the board early with forward Brayden Brown’s goal with 18 seconds gone in the game. VIU’s Dallas Calvin tied the game at 3:18, before the Mariners Brett Witala scored on a penalty shot with 2:02 remaining to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.
The second period started with two VIU goals to extend the Mariners lead to 4-1. Jordan Rauser scored on the power play at 2:57 before Cage Colpron notched a shorthanded goal at 5:43.
TWU cut the lead back to one goal with a power play goal from Julian Uhryniuk at 6:05 and an even strength goal by Evan Last at 17:10. Unfortunately, for TWU, VIU’s Dylan McCann scored with 1:32 remaining to give the Mariners a 5-3 lead heading into the final period.
The Spartans dominated the third period. Third year forward Jarrett Fontaine got the Spartans within one goal with a power-play marker at 6:47. Brown got his second of the night to tie the game, on the power-play, at 14:17 to set up Niedermaier’s heroic finish to the game.
The Spartans' Lucas Mills played the final 34:17 in net to earn the win, while Matt Huber took the loss for VIU.
“There might be a bit of carryover from last year, thinking we won and we don’t have to work as hard and get away with it, which isn’t our identity," says Kropf of his team's performance through 40 minutes. "Our identity is that we are a group of hard working guys, and if we get away from that we have problems."
"We have some speed and really good skill, but that’s not how we are going to win games. We are going to win with what you saw in the third period where guys were blocking shots and taking hits to get pucks out of our zone and not turn the puck over.”
The Spartans’ power play improved dramatically from Friday’s game as TWU finished tonight 4-7 with the man advantage. TWU outshot VIU 41-29, including a 21-14 edge in the third period.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will head to Simon Fraser University next Saturday, October 13 for their first road game of the season. Puck drop at the Bill Copeland Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. The game can also be seen live on HockeyTV.com.
