The British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League has unveiled its award winners for the month of January.
Player of the Month - Ryan Edwards, Selkirk College
Edwards' game took off in January following a slow first half by the usual standards of the two-time BCIHL all-star. After picking up an assist in a home loss to SFU to open 2017, the 23-year old scored twice and was named first star in a bounceback win over the Clan. He finished out the month with three points in a home ice win over UVic, and has now clawed back to point-a-game territory with 17 points in 16 contests.
Defenceman of the Month - Seth Schmidt, Selkirk College
The first-year blueliner from nearby Creston, BC continued his impressive offensive pace with five assists in three January games. He set up the game-winner in a big 4-2 victory over SFU on January 14th and had another two-point night the following weekend in a 6-1 win over UVic. Overall, the Maritimes Junior A alumnus sits third in scoring among BCIHL defencemen with 16 points in 17 regular season games.
Goaltender of the Month - Austin Brihn, Eastern Washington University
The third-year netminder bounced back from a rough first semester by picking up his first BCIHL shutout in EWU's first game of 2017. The Mukilteo, WA product stopped all 23 shots he faced on January 20th when the Eagles picked up their first regular season win with an 8-0 home ice thumping of UVic. Brihn took the loss in the return trip the next weekend but finished the month with a 2.00 GAA and .913 SV%.
Rookie of the Month - Patrick Holland, University of Victoria
The former Montreal Canadiens forward continued his consistent offensive production in January, scoring three times while picking up three assists in five games. He opened the month scoring the Vikes' lone goal and the shootout winner in a 2-1 victory over TWU, and closed it with a five-point weekend in a sweep of EWU that clinched a playoff spot. Holland sits third in the BCIHL in scoring with 24 points.
